With his many talents, Gilbert Remulla has over the years been known as a broadcast journalist, a politician, and a businessman, but over and above these, he is proudly a Caviteno at heart.

“I come from a family of full-blooded Cavitenos,” says Gilbert, who is now the Managing Director of Island Cove and Leisure Park, a 36- hectare tourism oriented facility in Kawit, Cavite. “the Remulla side hails from Imus, while the Catibayan side is from Naic.”

His family has been in public service since the time his father Juanito Remulla was elected as a provincial board member in the 1960s. It was during his father’s incumbency as governor of the province in the 1980s that Cavite was transformed from a sleepy backwater to a bustling industrialized province with one of the highest rates of economic growth over the past three decades.

Gilbert himself represented what was then known as Cavite’s second district in Congress; and today, two of his brothers – Jon-Vic and Boying – serve Cavitenos as Governor and Congressional Representative of the 7th District, respectively.

Now very much involved in the province’s tourism through his family’s resort, he brings us on a visual tour of his Cavite, his SM.

Launch of My City, My SM Launch

“Cavite, to my mind, is the best example of progress outside of Metro Manila. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been created by its industrialization with countless others benefiting from its downsteam effects.

At the same time, the province has been able to maintain its rustic, provincial character in its uplands, where sleepy towns with its booming agriculture thrive.”

Gilbert Remulla was honored during the recent My City, My SM launch at SM City Dasmarinas. Here, he is shown beside the panel showcasing his ad with his wife Dr. Georgina Isabel Diaz-Roa, Cavite Vice Governor Recto Catinbuhan, and Cavite Provincial Board Member Rex Mangubat. Joining them are SM Vice President for Marketing Millie Dizon, Group Brand Manager Ritchie Tan Gonzales, and Assistant Mall Manager Reymie de los Reyes.

    Gilbert at Island Cove

“If I would bring tourists to Cavite, I would take them to Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park. It’s an easy escape from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila being only 40 minutes away.

Our Fishing Village restaurant has great Filipino food and even better views of the metro skyline. From swimming to paintball, the spa to the zoo, there are countless ways to spend your day at Island Cove.”

A short drive from tree lined Roxas Boulevard and the scenic Coastal Road takes one to Island Cove Resort for the quintessential tropical island paradise experience.

    Taal Volcano

“Tagaytay is also a great place to bring tourists with its terrific views of Taal Volcano and its lake. The choices available for dining and overnight accommodations cut across all tastes and budgets.”

Tagaytay City is known as the country’s second summer capital next to Baguio. Its famous Tagaytay Ridge is actually a part of the crater of an ancient volcano that collapsed years ago are the Taal Lake and Taal Volcano, which is known as the smallest in the world. The Ridge offers a panoramic vista of this natural wonder, as well as picnic spots, hotels, and other recreational facilities.

“One of my favorite places is the Ilog Maria Honeybee Farm.”

The Ilog Maria Honeybee Farm is at the crossroads of the Malaking Ilog which drains the largest river basin in Silang and the Ilog Maria, which flows from seven natural springs within the Magsaysay’s family farm in the highlands of Silang, Cavite. This pristine environment is an ideal setting for a healthy rural lifestyle, and is perfect for keeping honeybees.

Gourmet’s Silang/Photobar of Pizza, Salad, and Lemonade

“I would also bring visitors to the herb garden and organic farm of Gourmet’s in Silang.”

Owned by Mr. Ernest Escaler, Gourmet’s in Silang has over the years become one of the key destinations in the Southern Luzon area. Gourmet’s Farm showcases its organic lettuce/herb farm, coffee roasting facility, Refresher’s Café and deli shop, and processes its popular Kitchen Exclusives and Herbal Tea Lines.

Refresher’s Café, the Gourmet diner along Aguinaldo Highway in Silang, offers a sumptuous serving of what grows most abundant in the Gourmet farm – organically grown lettuce transformed into a wide variety of salads freshly prepared in tamper proof packs, cold and hot sandwiches, pasta and pizza, and Refreshers Signature Coolers made from a special blend of herbs and lemonade.

Tinapa of Salinas in Rosario with the “mag-tatapa” and the kutsinta from Imus

“For foodies, there are a few secrets that have yet to be known. In Imus, the kutsinta and the native adobeo (cooked with atsuete and without soy sauce) is the best. The Valenciana of General Trias is something to be proud of, as is the tinapa of Salinas in Rosario.”

The tinapa of Salinas in Rosario with the “mag-tatapa” and the kutsinta from Imus are among Cavite’s foodie delights.

SM City Dasmarinas is one of the four SM malls in Cavite.  The others are in Bacoor, Rosario, and Molino.

“If there is any informal benchmark for progress in any town, city, or province, it would be the SM mall. For SM to invest in Cavite and build 4 malls, the message sent is that Cavite is on top of the progress chain.

With the new -found affluence by both the Cavitenos by birth and by choice, SM has provided all the comforts and products of Metro Manila to mall goers in the province. The latest movies, fashion trends, and products are available without the need to make the trek to the busy metropolis. It makes us feel that we have arrived.”

Gilbert with wife Georgia at Mocha Blends at SM City Dasmarinas.

“I like SM for the same reason that countless others do – it is a safe, clean, and comfortable gathering place that one can go to for shopping, running errands, relaxing, meeting, and having a meal.  It is the modern day town plaza where people from all walks of life cross paths and provide a sense of community to the mall goers.”
