Rudolf Pelaez Golez, one of the youngest piano virtuosos in the country, has brought much honor to the Philippines through his performances abroad, and by winning international competitions, most notably the 1st ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition in Kuala Lumpur in 2004.
A member of the prominent Pelaez family in Cagayan de Oro, he developed his love for music through his mother, Dr. Rafaelita F. Pelaez, who tutored him on the piano when he was four years old. He spent his high school years at the Julliard School of Music under the tutelage of Seymor Lipkin, and later studied piano under Jovianney Emmanuel Cruz of UP, Dr. Solomon Mikowsky, Jesus Angel Rodriguez and Cecilio tieles in Spain, Arie Varde in Hongkong, and Russel Brandon in Wales.
He now serves as Vice President of Cultural Affairs in the family owned Liceo de Cagayan University, which his maternal grandparents Rodolfo Neri-Pelaez of Cagayan de Oro and Elsa Pelaez Pelaez of Cebu founded in 1955. For his work in promoting culture in his hometown, he was named Artist in Residence of Misamis Oriental.
Although, he has attained international recognition, Rudolf has chosen to stay in the City of Golden Friendship. Here, he shows us why by taking us around his Cagayan de Oro, his SM.
“I have many wonderful memories of growing up in Cagayan de Oro. I developed my love for music through my mother, who taught me how to play the piano when I was only four years old.”

“As Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Department of Liceo de Cagayan University, I am in charge of organizing musical and cultural events throughout the year, not only for the school, but the city as well. We take the lead in mounting cultural shows and musicals in Cagayan de Oro City.
We also run the Safer River, Safer Life Saver Foundation, Inc., which is dedicated towards the preservation and sustainable development of the Cagayan River. Our school occupies 600 meters of the frontage of the river, so this advocacy comes naturally to us.’
Rudolf’s grandparents, Rodolfo Neri-Pelaez and Elsa Pelaez Pelaez founded the Liceo de Cagayan University in 1955 in the City of Golden Smiles. It is now the second largest university in Cagayan de Oro.
“If I would bring visitors around my hometown, I would bring them to the Divine Mercy Shrine in the nearby city of El Salvador in Misamis Oriental. Thousands of devotees like myself pray and marvel and the newly constructed shrine, which features a 75 foot statue of the Divine Mercy – the tallest in the world.”
Sitting on a hill 500 feet above sea level, the Divine Mercy Shrine was developed by Palafox and Associates. Looking out to Macalajar Bay with a magnificent view of villages in the mountains of Lanao, the shrine has a Rosary Walk, Stations of the Cross, an ampitheatre, and a Marian Residence.
“I will also bring guests to the Dahilayan Adventure Park, which is Asia’s longest zipline.”
The Dahilayan Adventure Park is the site of Asia’s Longest Dual Zipline, allowing one to fly like Superman from a launch point at 4,700 feet above sea level. With a speed of up to 90 km per hour, one can zoom through lush greenery and breathtaking views only found in the mountains of Dahilayan. Guaranteed safe and fun for every age, Zipzone has become the ultimate adventure for the young and old alike.
“No visit to Cagayan de Oro would be complete without tasting cuisine, especially our seafood.”
Rudolf enjoys the good food and great scenery at Tabing Dagat with sister in law Tanya Golez and friends Stella Marie Yap, Joyce Alvarez, and Marienits Pedrajas.
“SM has provided us with the usual places for our basic needs, as well as for leisure in Cagayan de Oro.”
